This is a brilliantly run property year in and year out, and especially since the mid- to late 1980s has produced one of the top four or five wines made in Pauillac in virtually every vintage. With 13.4% alcohol, the 2003 is one of the most powerful efforts this chateau has ever made. Its dense purple color is accompanied by sweet, jammy creme de cassis notes intermixed with roasted herbs, smoked meats, and chocolate. Although ripe, dense, full-bodied, and moderately tannic, it is silky (because of its low acidity and high glycerin) as well as accessible. It should firm up in the bottle, and be at its peak between 2008-2025.

Deep garnet-black. The nose is a little mute even given this wine’s youth, providing a moderate intensity of evolving aromas: game, earth, blackcurrant jam and a whiff of dried herbs. The medium+ bodied palate is gently styled with a medium+ level of finely grained tannins and medium+ acidity. Mid-palate is a bit hollow and the finish perhaps not as long as I’d expect. Good wine but not exactly living up to its first growth status. Drink now to 2025. Tasted February 2009.

The beautiful 1999 Mouton Rothschild may be a modern day clone of their 1962 or 1985. Its saturated ruby/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of cedar wood, creme de cassis, wood smoke, coffee, and dried herbs. The wine is forward, lush, and full-bodied. It is already complex as well as succulent, fleshy, and long. Tannin in the finish suggests more nuances will emerge in 4-5 years. It is a complex, classic Mouton. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030.

A distinctive bouquet of violets, soy, pepper, blackberries, cassis, and tree bark gives this 2001 a singular style. This dense ruby/purple-colored blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and a whopping 14% Petit Verdot exhibits plenty of structure, wonderful sweetness, a closed style, but a rich, textured, persistent character. The unusually large percentage of Petit Verdot gives the wine more structure and less initial charm. This beauty needs some time in the cellar. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018.

For reasons that escape me, Gazin is never easy to evaluate young, and I often upgrade my opinion after the wine has had several years in the bottle. Performing much better from bottle than it did from cask, the 2003 Gazin is lavishly oaked, but also reveals plenty of black cherry and currant notes, sweet, surprisingly full-bodied, powerful flavors, and moderate tannin. For a 2003 Pomerol, it is an atypically big, back-strapping, muscular effort that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age. An undeniable success for the vintage, it should drink well for 14-15 years.

Dense ruby/purple-colored with a spicy, sweet nose of jammy cherries, mocha, and a hint of resin, the plump, fleshy 2003 Hosanna reveals light to moderate tannin. It is an impressively constituted blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. This stylish effort is exceptionally successful in such a challenging vintage for Pomerol. Give it 1-3 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 14+ years.

Very deep garnet-black. Warm plum, cedar, tobacco and mocha make for a very alluring if somewhat contrasting nose on this young wine. The palate is very tight, with firm, slightly astringent tannins and the faintest touch of bitterness hinting over zealous extraction. This is however a minor point as the wine is wonderfully rich, full bodied and concentrated, and aptly balanced by medium+ acidity. Very long finish. Drink now to 2028. Tasted February 2009.

One cannot admire enough proprietor Anthony Barton and his classic, potentially long-lived wines that are models of power, elegance, and longevity – in short, these wines symbolize what makes Bordeaux so world-renowned! Probably capable of rivaling the 2000, the uncompromisingly made, formidably powerful, masculine, and highly extracted 2003 has an inky purple color to the rim, a big, deep personality with a tight but promising nose of forest floor, creme de cassis, smoke, charcoal, licorice, and perhaps even truffle. It is layered, rich, and set for an exceptionally long life, but don’t expect to get a lot of joy even in this somewhat overtly styled vintage for at least another 7-8 years. From bottle the 2003 is showing as well as can be expected. A soft, sexy, near-term style of claret with a deep plum/ruby/purple-tinged color, a big, sweet nose of anise, creme de cassis, smoke, Provencal herbs, and some spice box, it is opulent, fleshy, not profoundly concentrated, but rich enough. Everything is nicely balanced with silky tannin and low acidity. Drink it over the next 12-14 years as this is a seductive wine.

There are 10,000 cases of this perfect sweet white Bordeaux. The 2001 Yquem reveals a hint of green in its light gold color. While somewhat reticent aromatically, with airing, it offers up honeyed tropical fruit, orange marmalade, pineapple, sweet creme brulee, and buttered nut-like scents. In the mouth, it is full-bodied with gorgeously refreshing acidity as well as massive concentration and unctuosity. Everything is uplifted and given laser-like focus by refreshing acidity. This large-scaled, youthful Yquem appears set to take its place among the most legendary vintages of the past, and will age effortlessly for 75+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2100+.

Tasted twice Deep garnet-purple colour. The nose begins a little mute with a suggestion of freshly crushed blackberries and blackcurrants, forest floor, cinnamon and a touch of loam. The 2001 Barbaresco is a wine of tremendous harmony that has come together beautifully since I last tasted it six months ago. It presents a very pretty nose of crushed raspberries, spices, and minerals followed by complex dark cherry, tar, menthol and mineral flavors on a delicate, medium-bodied frame of great length. Objectively speaking the single-vineyard wines may be more rich and structured, but it is the Barbaresco this year that really speaks to the soul. If I could only have one wine from this estate in 2001, it would undoubtedly be the terrific Barbaresco. Highly recommended. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2021.

One of the things I have learned over the years is that you can count on Angelo Gaja to make a strong showing in just about any tasting. Yes, I know, Sperss is not Barolo (a small percentage of Barbera is added), but at its core the wine captures the essence of Serralunga and is as representative of these hillside vineyards as any Barolo. Dark tar, smoke, leather, spices, menthol and black cherries all make an appearance in this muscular, full-throttle wine. While the vast majority of 1998 Barolos can be enjoyed today, the 1998 Sperss could use another few years in the cellar. It isn’t a crime to open a bottle today, but this is one of the few 1998s that still has upside potential. Simply put, the 1998 Sperss is a jewel. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2023. Incidentally, I tasted through the entire 1998 Gaja lineup last year for the 7th Edition of Parker’s Wine Buyers’ Guide and found all the wines outstanding. Highlights included Sori San Lorenzo and Sori Tildin, which along with Sperss, are terrific wines.

The 1995 Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva is a towering, majestic wine of heroic proportions. This big, full-bodied wine flows across the palate with remarkable depth, expansiveness and purity. There are tons of ripe dark fruit here, along with nuances of leather, spices and sweet tobacco. This opulent wine builds on the finish, where it displays superb staying power. This is another reference-point wine from Giuseppe Quintarelli, and although it is insanely expensive, it isn't marred by some of the imperfections (namely excessive volatile acidity) that sometimes show up in his wines. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025.

It isn't easy to keep up with Giuseppe Quintarelli, as this legendary producer releases his wines when he feels they are ready, not a moment sooner. As is often the case, these are some of the most mind-blowing wines being made anywhere, but sadly, prices are equally dizzying. Still, for readers who can afford them, these are reference-point wines.
